Lasqueti Island at a Glance
Measuring approximately 8 km (4.9 mi) wide and 22 km (13.6 mi) long, the small
Lasqueti Island lies in the Georgia
Strait, north of Vancouver
Island's French Creek and southwest of Texada Island. Those seeking solitude
or a rural experience will find it on this island that has no paved roads and
no public transportation. Arriving by ferry (with no car service), private boat
or plane is the only way to access the island. Upon arrival on dry land, all
adventuresome exploring is done by foot or bicycle. The small population of
permanent residents live either without electricity or tap into alternative
sources of power, such as solar or micro-hydro. Situated on the southeastern
end of Lasqueti Island, Squitty
Bay Provincial Park offers several recreational pursuits, which include
boating, swimming, salt-water fishing and cold water scuba diving. Visitors
can also spend the day exploring the scenic but rocky and arid terrain. Views
of Mount
Baker, Comox Valley and Comox
Glacier are seen from the park. Art lovers can spend some time at the small
local art gallery, Arts
Centre, which features various exhibitions, film screenings, poetry classes
and life drawing groups.
